This 3-position Drop Head was built by Tickford, a 200-year old British coach building company based in Newport Pagnell. The standard Jaguar body was modified to turn the 4-door sedan into a 2-door convertible. The installation of two larger suicide doors meant the widening of the door aperture and moving the hinge panel further to the rear. This gave the back seat passengers a realistic chance of actually getting into the back seat.
The 3-position Drop Head design is pure Tickford, allowing for either fully covered luxury motoring, or a fully folded down top, or a half way position, opening the driver's compartment while maintaining a covered area for the rear seat passengers.
And of course there are the signature Landau bows on either side that are the trademark of the coach builder.
This particular car left the Jaguar factory in June 1951, on it way to New Zealand, where it was enjoyed and cared for by only a few owners.
Within the last few years it came into the ownership of a well known restoration specialist who undertook a total rebuild of the car. The body was removed from the chassis, completely stripped to bare metal and any deterioration of the wood and metal was rectified. The chassis was sand blasted back to bare metal and was found to be in perfect condition. The chassis and body were then repainted and re-assembled.
Mechanically the car was completely overhauled. The 3.5 liter engine was reconditioned, as were the gearbox and rear axle. All suspension and steering components were likewise reconditioned before being re-assembled on the chassis.
The interior was likewise completely rebuilt. The woodwork was somewhat deteriorated from age, so it was stripped and all new English walnut veneer was applied and finished with the original French polish method. The seats were re-upholstered and a new hood was fabricated.
The end result is quite stunning. It has traveled only a limited number of miles since its restoration and is ready to drive and enjoy.
