The Bristol 400 was an intriguing car. It was based on the pre-war BMW 326 frame with the BMW 328 engine was viewed as a pinnacle of engineering at its time. The body was mainly of steel but with aluminium bonnet, doors and boot skin. The engine was extremely advanced, featuring hemispherical combustion chambers with a complicated system of push rods to the single side mounted camshaft.

This particular car is in the ownership of a restoration specialist and is in the final stages of a total body-off assembly.
The body was removed and the chassis and all panels were stripped to bare metal. Any defects were rectified and the car repainted it it current stunning livery.
The mechanical parts have been totally restored. The 6-cylinder 2.2 liter engine has been re-bored with new pistons, the crankshaft ground and obviously all new bearings and seals installed. It has also been fitted with a later model oil pump that give higher and more reliable oil pressure.
The interior woodwork has been refinished with new veneer and French polished.
At the time of writing the engine was being re-assembled by a specialist engineering company. Once that is installed the car will be road tested and then sent to have the interior re-upholstered. It is expected to be ready for inspection by interested parties early in the New Year.
